The Sakip Sabanci Museum at the European side of Bosphorus which is also known as “Atli Kosk” has been used as the residence of some important sultans who reigned during the Ottoman Empire between the years 1848 and 1884. The building which collapsed in the year 1925 was rebuilt later and purchased for Princess Iffet Hanim who was the sister of Prince Mehmet Ali Hasan in the year 1944. The mansion which was purchased by Haci Omer Sabanci from the heirs of the prince has been used as the residence of the Sabanci Family until 1969. The historical building which today is used as a museum depending to the Sabanci University is located in Emirgan,which is one of the oldest districts of Istanbul.The second horse sculpture in the garden of the Atli Kosk is the copy of the fouth horse sculpture of San Marco church in Venice,which was taken from Hippodrome in Sultanahmet during 4th Crusade in 1204. In the first floor of the Atli Kosk Ottoman Calligraphy works of the Sabanci Collection are displayed. The collection which comprises approximately 400 calligraphic works comprises tablets, certificates, edicts, poem books and calligraphy devices besides korans and prayer books. Sabanci Museum painting collection includes works of Ottoman and Turkish artists from the beginning of the 19th century uptodate such as Osman Hamdi, Nazmi Ziya, Ibrahim Calli, Fikret Mualla and european artists who lived, worked or were engaged by the Empire within the boundaries of the Ottoman Empire. Chinese and Japanese porcelain , sculptures and antiques are displayed in the museum as well. Sabanci Museum is open from 10:00 to 18:00 between Tuesdays and Fridays and from 11:00 to 18:00 on Saturdays and Sundays.
